Northern Bohemia from the saddle of a bike

Northern Bohemia is a region best explored on the move. Long-distance cycle routes follow rivers, cross mountain plateaus and pass through historic towns, connecting natural scenery, cultural attractions and places to relax. Simply get on your bike and set off on a journey where the experience changes with every kilometre.

Greenway Jizera is one of the region’s most varied long-distance routes. It begins in Jizerka, one of the highest-altitude settlements in Czechia, and follows the river all the way to the open countryside of the Elbe lowlands. Over almost 180 kilometres, it links mountain meadows, romantic valleys and historic towns. Highlights include the section through Železný Brod, where the river cuts deep into the rocks, and the popular village of Malá Skála in the heart of Bohemian Paradise. Turnov is an ideal place to stop for refreshments or visit a museum. Around 40% of the route is separated from road traffic, and thanks to convenient rail connections, cyclists can easily choose to ride individual sections. We recommend allowing at least five days to explore the area at a relaxed pace.

The Oder–Neisse Cycle Route has a different character, with its name already hinting at the international journey ahead. The Czech section begins in Nová Ves nad Nisou and descends through Jablonec nad Nisou and Liberec into the valley of the Lusatian Neisse. Along the way, you can stop at the Mšeno Reservoir or visit attractions such as the Glass and Jewellery Museum, Automoto Museum Lučany and the Ferdinand Porsche Birth House. Beyond Hrádek nad Nisou, the Kristýna recreational area and Grabštejn Castle invite you to take a break before the route crosses the border into Zittau and continues through Germany and Poland. The Czech section is approximately 50 kilometres long, mostly flat and safe, while around 70% of the entire route is separated from motor traffic. It is ideal for families and leisure cyclists, while also opening the door to a longer journey across Europe without borders.

For a more leisurely ride, choose the Ploučnice Cycle Route. Covering almost 100 kilometres, it follows the river from the foothills of Ještěd to its confluence with the Elbe in Děčín. The route mainly uses quiet roads and paved tracks, with very little elevation gain, making it ideal for relaxed cycling trips.

Its main attractions include the river’s natural meanders and the unique Průrva Ploučnice rock tunnel, the village of Kryštofovo Údolí, Zákupy Chateau with its Baroque stables and the fairy-tale basalt formation of Panská skála. You can also stop in Benešov nad Ploučnicí to see its Renaissance chateau complex or finish beneath the majestic Děčín Chateau. Three days are enough to enjoy the route at a comfortable pace.

Together, these three main routes form the backbone of cycle tourism in Northern Bohemia. They can be combined with one another, linked to other regional routes or followed onwards into neighbouring countries. Each has its own rhythm, landscape and atmosphere, but they all offer the same opportunity: to discover the region gradually, surrounded by the quiet of nature and with enough time to stop wherever the moment feels right.
