There are several routes to Sněžka on foot, most often from Pec pod Sněžkou through Obří důl, or with the help of the cable car via Růžová hora. If you walk all the way up, you experience the Krkonoše Mountains gradually – from the valley and forest through dwarf pine to the open ridge, where the weather changes faster and the landscape feels much harsher.
Sněžka is both the highest and the most visited mountain in Czechia, so it is worth planning your trip carefully. In the main season and in good weather, both the summit and the cable car can get very busy, so an early start or a less exposed date can make the whole experience much more enjoyable.
The climb to Sněžka should be treated as a mountain hike, not an ordinary walk. Even in summer, the summit can quickly get cold, strong winds may pick up or rain may arrive, so sturdy hiking shoes, layered clothing, a waterproof jacket and enough water are worth having. In winter, caution is even more important. The routes may be icy, snow-covered and harder to follow in poor weather, so good footwear, warm clothing and respect for current conditions are essential.
