Rieger Trail

The Rieger Trail leads through the Jizera River valley from Semily towards Spálov and ranks among the most impressive hiking routes in Bohemian Paradise. Here, the river cuts its way between the rocks, the path hangs directly above the water in places, and the landscape alternates between quiet forest sections and a dramatic canyon. It is a trip with a strong atmosphere in every season – in summer thanks to the water and shade, in winter thanks to icefalls and frozen rock walls.

The best-known part of the trail is the 77-metre suspended gallery above the Jizera, offering direct views of the rushing river and the rock walls around it. The route follows the red-marked hiking trail from Semily through Bítouchov to Podspálov and is roughly 3 to 4 kilometres long, depending on the chosen starting point. Along the way, you will pass rocky viewpoints, the Antal Stašek spring and places where the river is almost within reach.

The trail is also popular in winter, when icefalls and frozen overhangs form on the rocks. In the colder months, the valley has a completely different atmosphere, but visitors should expect slippery surfaces and adjust their footwear and pace accordingly. In Podspálov, the trip can continue along the Palacký Trail towards Železný Brod or Tanvald, or you can use the train connection back to Semily.
