Architecture Day: Karel Hubáček House

The first attempt at prefabricated family home construction in Czechoslovakia took place in the Starý Harcov district of Liberec. The design was by architect Karel Hubáček, who lived there with his family from 1962 until the end of his life. The building was never put into serial production, but it still impresses today with its spatial solution and construction. The house uses a steel frame with Cerami-type plaster and panels made of foam concrete and slate. The interior, with its sliding walls, showcases a sophisticated concept of flexible living space. Since 2024, the property has been managed by the North Bohemian Museum, which has newly created a permanent exhibition dedicated to Hubáček's life and work. Visitors can explore the original interior with period furnishings and an exhibition commemorating one of the most important Czech architects of the 20th century.
